Conversation/everyday Discourse

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.1.1.1.2 - Ask questions that elicit elaboration and respond to others’ questions in conversation

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least five question words (why, how, for what reason, explain, describe) that prompt a speaker to give detailed, elaborate answers rather than one-word replies.
  2. Ask follow-up questions using these words to draw out fuller responses from a conversation partner on a given topic.
  3. Respond to questions that ask for elaboration by giving answers with reasons, examples or explanations that go beyond a simple “yes” or “no”.
  4. Engage in a paired conversation on a familiar topic, using at least three elaboration questions and giving at least two elaborated responses.
  5. Recognise when a conversation partner has given a shallow answer and choose an appropriate question word to invite them to say more.
