Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.2.2.1.3 - Organise an appreciation and appraisal of own and others’ artworks that reflect the history and culture of the people in the community.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

State the meaning of at least five art-specific vocabulary words (content, composition, primary colour, texture, tone) and use them correctly when describing an artwork.
Prepare a simple appraisal criteria checklist with at least four criteria to guide the appreciation of an artwork.
Organise and lead a small-group appraisal session in which each member’s artwork is described and evaluated using the agreed criteria and art vocabulary.
Write a short personal journal entry (6 to 8 sentences) reflecting on their own aesthetic experience, including one strength and one area for refinement.
Defend their cultural choices in their artwork during group discussion, explaining how the piece reflects the history or culture of their community.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

1. Prepare criteria to appreciate and appraise own and others' artworks using relevant art vocabulary and write report on own aesthetic experience. Examples of art specific language vocabulary: content, context, composition, primary colour, secondary colour, tertiary colour, complementary colour, form, tone, pattern, line, texture, shape.
2. Reflect and share aesthetic experience for future refinement and modification. Example: pair work, small group work, group presentations, written evaluation in a personal journal, one on one discussion with teacher.
