Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.2.1.1.3 - Experiment by using the techniques to test and prepare clay, pulp paper (papier-mâché) for modelling

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Prepare clay for modelling by testing its plasticity, moisture content and workability using simple field tests.
Prepare pulp paper (papier-mâché) by tearing, soaking, pulping and mixing with adhesive to create a workable modelling material.
Use at least two hand building techniques, such as pinch pot, coiling, slab building or indenting, to create simple models from prepared clay or pulp paper.
Evaluate their own and peers’ finished models using appropriate descriptive language, noting what worked well and what could be improved.
Explain the steps involved in preparing and testing modelling materials following the processes demonstrated in class.

1. Prepare and test clay and pulp paper for modelling
2. Identify and use hand building techniques for modelling such as coiling, slab building, pinch pot, modelling, indenting, relief in clay, play dough, plasticine, papier-mâché (pulp paper).
3. Display models for appreciation and reflection and use appropriate language to give supportive and informative peer and self-evaluation. Example: The modelling technique has achieved the desired form; it could have been improved through closer attention to scale.
