JHS1 Creative Arts And Design · Term 1, Week 9
Creativity, Innovation and the Design Process
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B7.1.3.1.3 - Demonstrate ability to apply the design process to create artefacts that solve specific problems in the local community.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify real problems in their local community and select one problem worthy of a design solution.
- Apply the five stages of the design process (Identify, Research, Generate Ideas, Prototype, Test and Refine) to plan and produce a simple model artefact.
- Use available materials and tools appropriately to construct a working model or prototype that addresses the chosen problem.
- Evaluate their own artefact against a simple set of criteria and seek feedback from peers to refine the design.
- Present and explain their final artefact, describing how their solution connects to the problem and the community need.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
1. Apply knowledge of creativity and innovation to evaluate specific problems in society to deduce how the design process can be used to solve those problems for reporting and feedback. 2. Reflect on feedback and apply relevant manual and digital tools, materials and techniques to design and create model artefacts that express own concept for solving specific problems in society for appreciation and display. 3. Display design expressions and prototypes of artefacts to disseminate own creativity and innovation for appreciation and feedback.
