Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.1.1.1.1 - Identify the 28 sounds of Arabic consonants and vowels, and the various sound groupings.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

identify by ear each of the 28 distinct Arabic consonant sounds when spoken aloud by the teacher.
produce the correct Arabic sound for each letter of the alphabet from ا through ي when shown the letter.
name the place of articulation group (e.g. bilabial, alveolar, pharyngeal) for each of the 28 letters using the sound groupings given in the exemplar.
classify letters into their correct sound grouping when they hear them spoken in isolation.
differentiate between letters that sound identical to a Ghanaian ear (such as ح and خ, or س and ص) by focusing on the place of articulation.

This lesson opens the strand on Arabic phonics. It focuses only on the 28 consonant sounds and their articulation groups. It does not yet teach long vowels, short vowel marks, or syllables; those appear in later weeks (B7.1.1.1.3 and B7.1.1.1.4).
