Indicator: B6.4.15.1.1
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least five features of an informal letter, including the writer’s address, date, salutation, body, closing, and signature.
- Distinguish between formal and informal letters by sorting given examples into the correct category and justifying their choices.
- Generate a topic on which they can write to a friend and state the purpose and audience for their letter.
- Write an informal letter to a friend expressing their views on a given topic, using the correct letter format with all key parts in their proper positions.
- Edit their own and peers’ letters for format, clarity, and completeness using a simple checklist.

- Discuss the features of informal letters with learners. - Give examples of formal letters to them and let them talk about the similarities and differences between formal and informal letters. - Brainstorm to guide learners generate topics they would want to write on and let each group choose a topic. - Learners identify purpose and audience and make a mind map to guide the writing. - Each group writes an informal letter and edits it. The letters are passed round the groups for editing.
