Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.4.13.2.2 - Use words, phrases, and clauses to clarify the relationships among claim(s) and reasons.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Identify words, phrases, and clauses that connect a claim to its supporting reasons in a given argument.
Use contrast words (e.g., however, although, on the other hand) to show the relationship between a claim and a reason.
Use cause-and-effect phrases (e.g., because of, as a result, due to) to link a claim to evidence.
Write 3 to 5 sentences of an argument using linking words and phrases to clarify the relationship between a claim and its reasons.
Orally justify why a particular linking word or phrase was chosen in a short argument, using correct grammar.
