B6 English Language · Term 3, Week 5

Creative/Free Writing

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.4.11.1.2 - Write poems and imaginative narrative stories using ideas from poems and imaginative texts read or viewed

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the key elements of a narrative story (title, characters, setting, plot, conflict, and dialogue) when discussing a short imaginative text.
  2. Work collaboratively in a small group to plan a story by creating characters, establishing a setting, and deciding on a conflict.
  3. Write a first draft of an imaginative story following the stages of the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing).
  4. Revise and edit a draft story by checking for a clear plot, consistent characters, and effective dialogue.
  5. Present a short poem to the class based on a topic of choice, applying descriptive language.

Position in the teaching sequence: In Week 5, Term 3, learners have already practised free writing on national issues. This lesson now shifts focus to imaginative and creative writing, guiding learners to craft their own stories and poems. They will build on their earlier understanding of paragraphs and sentence construction to create complete imaginative texts.
