Indicator: B6.4.6.1.2 - use key words, phrases or clauses to introduce the main idea in the paragraph.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Identify the main idea sentence in a given paragraph and state what the paragraph is about in one sentence.
Identify and underline the key words, phrases or clauses that introduce the main idea in a paragraph.
Explain how the key words or phrases signal the topic of a paragraph to the reader.
Write five sentences about a given topic, beginning with a sentence that clearly introduces the main idea using a key phrase or clause.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Display a Model Paragraph.
- Put learners into groups to read the paragraph and identify what the passage is about or the main idea.
- Have them identify the sentence that contains the main idea.
- Let the group identify the supporting ideas and what each sentence says about the main idea.
- Ask each group choose a given topic and write five sentences about the topic.
