By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Read a level-appropriate passage and identify the main ideas.
- Write a short summary of a passage in their own words, excluding examples, illustrations and words in parenthesis.
- Arrange events from a passage in the correct sequence order when writing a summary.
- Present their written summaries to the class and give constructive feedback on others’ summaries.
- Collaborate effectively in groups to produce a concise, accurate summary that captures only the essential ideas.

- Have learners read the passage. - Discuss it briefly with learners. - Working in groups, learners write a summary of the passage taking note of the main idea(s). - Let learners present their write up for discussion. E.g. Select main ideas from the passage without examples/illustrations/words in parenthesis. - Learners use the sequence order to write down the events that took place in the correct order.
