Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.2.6.4.3 - Use words suitable for purpose, audience, context and culture in relation to: type of texts (exposition/explanation, persuasive language, argumentative), medium (spoken/written), register (formal/informal) etc.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the purpose, audience and context of a given text and state whether formal or informal language is required.
  2. Distinguish between formal and informal registers and give examples of each in spoken and written form.
  3. Select appropriate words for a given purpose (explaining, persuading or arguing) and justify their choices.
  4. Produce a short written or spoken piece that matches a specified audience, context and register.

Have them role play a simple story to bring out the importance of these elements and their usage.
