Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.1.10.1.2 - Demonstrate awareness of the differences between spoken and written forms of language (simplicity/complexity of sentence structures, formal/informal)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least three differences between spoken and written forms of English, such as contractions, sentence length, and word choice.
  2. Sort given sentences into formal and informal categories with at least 80% accuracy.
  3. Convert informal spoken sentences into formal written sentences and vice versa, using correct grammar and vocabulary.
  4. Role-play a formal situation (for example, speaking to a chief or a head teacher) and an informal situation (for example, talking to a friend) using appropriate language.
  5. Explain why speakers often use simpler sentences and contractions while writers often use more complex, complete sentences.
