B6 Computing · Term 1, Week 10

Data, Sources and Usage

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: B6.1.3.1.11 - Manipulate data to gain required output (e.g. Finding sum, mean, grand totals, maximum, minimum, mode, division, multiplication etc.)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify and name the arithmetic operations (sum, mean, grand total, maximum, minimum, mode, division, multiplication) used to manipulate data.
  2. Calculate the sum, grand total, maximum, minimum, and mode of a given set of data by hand.
  3. Compute the mean and apply division and multiplication to solve data problems.
  4. Use a spreadsheet application (or a paper-based table) to perform calculations and obtain required outputs from raw data.
  5. Explain the importance of manipulating data to gain useful information in everyday life.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Guide learners to find the mode, product, minimum value, maximum value etc.
NB: This is to help the learner with fundamental principle of problem solving skills and creativity in computing and Computer Science.
