Indicator: B5.4.2.1.1

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify at least five schools that existed in the Gold Coast by 1930 and state where each is located.
  2. Describe at least three measures the British took to promote education, including the registration of teachers through Ordinances.
  3. Explain the role of the churches in establishing and running schools during the colonial period.
  4. Discuss the contributions of key individuals such as Dr Kwegyir Aggrey to education in Ghana.
  5. Use historical evidence from pictures and the community to reconstruct the educational developments of the colonial era.

Enquiry routes: Which schools were built during the colonial period? Where were they located? What did the British do to promote education?
1. Identify schools that existed by 1930, where they are located and state some facts about these schools
2. List some of the measures the British took to promote education in the Gold Coast. E.g. Ordinances to make sure all teachers were registered
3. Discuss the role of the churches in Ghana's education sector
4. Recall the role of the important people in (a) the community and (b) the country who played key role in the educational sector. e.g. Dr Kwegyir Aggrey.
NB: Display pictures of such people in the class.
