B5 English Language · Term 3, Week 10
Using action Words
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B5.5.4.1.3 - Use past perfect in speech and in writing
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify sentences written in the simple past tense and sentences written in the past perfect tense when reading or listening to a narrative.
- Explain that the past perfect tense describes an action that happened before another past action, using the helping verb “had” plus a past participle.
- Complete sentences by inserting the correct past perfect verb form (had + past participle).
- Write a short narrative of at least five sentences that correctly uses both the simple past and the past perfect tense.
- Present their group narrative orally to the class, using the past perfect tense correctly in speech.
This lesson builds on the work from Term 3, Week 9 and the earlier part of Term 3, Week 10, where learners studied the simple past and present perfect tenses. This lesson focuses specifically on the past perfect. The lesson does not cover subject-verb agreement with singular and plural subjects, which is scheduled for the next slot (B5.5.4.1.4).
