By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Identify the purpose and features of a concluding statement in a persuasive or argumentative text
Evaluate sample conclusions to determine whether they follow logically from the arguments presented
Write a concluding statement that restates their opinion and summarises their key reasons
Use persuasive language in their concluding statement to leave a lasting impression on the reader
Revise their conclusion to ensure it connects clearly to the claims and reasons in the body of their argument

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Revise persuasive writing.
- Have them go through the writing process to present/state an opinion, explain and justify it so as to persuade the reader to accept their opinion or point of view.
- Teach the features of a debate.
- Guide learners to select a controversial or debatable topic. Divide the class into two to prepare using the writing process as a guide, and debate on the topic.
