B5 English Language · Term 3, Week 6
Persuasive/Argumentative Writing
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify linking words, phrases, and clauses (such as because, therefore, since, as a result, for this reason) that show the relationship between a claim and its supporting reason.
- Explain how specific linking words signal whether a reason is a cause, a result, or a supporting explanation.
- Use appropriate linking words and adjective forms to connect claims to reasons in given sentence frames and short paragraphs.
- Write a short argument paragraph containing a claim, at least two reasons, and linking words that clarify the relationship between the claim and the reasons.
Indicator: B5.4.13.2.2 - Use words, phrases, and clauses to clarify the relationships between claim(s) and reasons.
This builds directly on B5.4.13.1.1 from Week 5, where learners wrote explanations to support opinions, and connects forward to B5.4.13.2.1 (claims with credible evidence), B5.4.13.2.3 (formal style), and B5.4.13.2.4 (concluding statements) later in this same week.
