Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.4.3.1.4 - Use cohesive devices - pronouns, repetition of vocabulary or grammatical structures to link ideas in a paragraph, e.g. use connectors to link similar ideas, give reasons and add information

  1. Identify cohesive devices (pronouns, repeated vocabulary, and connectors) in a given paragraph and state what each one links or does.
  2. Explain the role of cohesive devices in making a paragraph flow smoothly and hold together.
  3. Use connectors such as “and”, “also”, “in addition”, “because”, “so”, and “therefore” to link similar ideas, give reasons, and add information in sentences.
  4. Complete a paragraph with missing cohesive devices, choosing words that make the paragraph meaningful and well connected.
  5. Write a short paragraph of 5 to 7 sentences on a familiar topic, using at least three different cohesive devices correctly.
