Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.2.9.1.2 - Use context to confirm or self-correction strategies to confirm understanding of level-appropriate texts

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify words in a level-appropriate text that are difficult or unfamiliar and use surrounding words and sentences to figure out their meanings.
  2. Apply at least two self-correction strategies (rereading, reading on, using punctuation clues) when a sentence does not make sense on the first read.
  3. Answer comprehension questions that require using context clues, such as identifying connecting words between paragraphs.
  4. Explain in their own words how context helped them confirm or correct their understanding of a passage.
  5. Read a short paragraph aloud and self-correct misread words using context and punctuation cues.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Have learners read the grade appropriate texts paying attention to punctuation marks, words, sentences and paragraphs.
- Provide questions that will guide learners in understanding the passage, e.g., What word connects paragraphs one and two?
- Learners use correction strategy to help them make meaning from the text as they read.
