Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.2.6.2.1 - Develop a rich vocabulary stock through extensive reading of age-appropriate texts, using the dictionary or online resources to look up meanings of words etc.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Read an age-appropriate story and identify at least five unfamiliar words from the text.
  2. Use context clues within a sentence to predict the meaning of an unfamiliar word before checking a dictionary.
  3. Look up the meanings of unfamiliar words using a print dictionary or an online resource such as the Build My Vocab App.
  4. Record newly learned words with their meanings and example sentences in a personal vocabulary book.
  5. Read a selected story aloud to the class and share at least two new words they learned from it.

- Choose and read an age-appropriate story to the class.
- Have learners talk about the story.
- Let them identify unfamiliar vocabulary and find their meanings in context.
- Have learners use the Build My Vocab App on the internet to help build the most globally used language to help develop their vocabulary.
- Guide learners to choose books from the school library or distribute supplementary readers to them.
- Introduce a simple vocabulary book made by teacher to guide the learners build their vocabulary.
- Read to learners to encourage them read extensively. Encourage individual learners to read their selected story books to the class.
