Learning Objectives

Indicator: B5.1.10.3.5 - Use discourse markers to signpost stages in a presentation (e.g. “For the next part”, “For example”, “In summary”)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Identify at least eight discourse markers used to signpost the opening, middle and closing stages of a presentation.
Classify discourse markers according to their function: introducing a new point, giving examples, moving to the next part, or summarising.
Use appropriate discourse markers to fill gaps in a sample speech or presentation text.
Deliver a short two-minute presentation (on a familiar topic) that includes at least three different discourse markers to signpost stages.
Distinguish between formal and informal discourse markers and choose appropriately for the audience.
