- Demonstrate the structure of a compound sentence by joining simple sentences with and.
e.g.
simple sentences Conjunction compound sentence The boy woke up. The boy woke up and The boy prayed. And prayed.
- Have learners identify the coordinating conjunction in the sentence.
- Put learners in groups to form simple sentences.
- Have groups join the simple sentences with and and but.

 The worked example is a three-column table (simple sentences | Conjunction | compound sentence) whose cells arrive in the text layer as one run of words; the figure shows it.
