Learning Objectives

Indicator: B1.1.2.1.2 - Describe and group materials by their appearance (shape, size, colour, texture, mass)

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Describe at least three observable properties (shape, size, colour, texture, mass) of materials collected from the school environment.
  • Group materials into categories based on one or more observable properties such as big/small, rough/smooth, heavy/light.
  • Sort a given set of materials using more than one property at a time (for example, red and rough).
  • Draw and colour at least two materials, showing their actual shape and colour.
  • Talk about their drawings and explain why they grouped the materials the way they did.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Collect different materials from the school environment and bring them to class.
- Learners describe the appearance of the materials (in terms of colour, size, feel, length etc.).
- Group materials based on their observable properties such as shape, size (big/small), colour, texture ('rough', 'smooth', 'sticky' and 'grainy' ) , mass (heavy / light).
- Draw and colour several objects/ materials based on their appearance such as colour and shape.
- Display their drawings for class observation and talk about them.
- Relate the lesson with everyday experiences (appearance and properties of common items).
