Learning Objectives

Indicator: B1.4.3.1.1 - Match lower and upper case letters

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Identify all 26 capital letters (A to Z) and their matching small letters (a to z) when presented on a chart.
Match capital letter cards to their corresponding small letter pairs and say the name and sound of each matched pair.
Sort a mixed pile of letter cards into capital letters and small letters accurately.
Write at least 10 matching pairs of capital and small letters legibly in their exercise books using correct letter formation.
Play a group matching game, taking turns and working cooperatively to match letters correctly.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Show a chart of letters (small and capital).
e.g. A B C D E… a b c d e…
- Place letter cards (small and capital letters) on teacher's table.
- Put learners into groups and ask representatives of the groups to take turns to pick and match the letter cards to the letters on the chart. Those who are able to match them correctly win points for their groups and receive stars.
- Let learners write the letters in their books.
